Usurper (Way of the Tiger, No 3)
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (November, 1988)
Authors: Mark Smith, Jamie Thomson, and Jamie Thompson
Average review score:

for no-one ever escapes from within the Pallisade of Thorns
In my opinion the best of the series. In Usurper the hero (which you play), Avenger, has to travel to Irsmuncast in the Manmarch to claim back the throne which is rightfully his.

The best thing about the book, other than the great story line, is that you have a choice of two ways in which to travel. You can go a more direct route which is more dangerous or take the indirect route, which is arguably not that much easier. This means you as the player can effectively play the book twice and enjoy it as new the second time round.

The illustrations are lovely and the map is beautifully drawn, the attention to detail is unbelievable at times and you will find yourself not being able to put the book down. SO! why oh why was the way of the Tiger series taken out of print? Because they didn't sell that well? To be honest, I can't understand why.

Classic Adventure
This book is very awsome. I would recommend it to anybody interested in ninjitsu and adventure. The way this book is written immerses the reader in it's world. I've read it over 10 times over the course of many years, which is quiet a feat since I rarely re-read any book I have read.

Verbal Judo : Words As a Force Option
Published in Hardcover by Charles C Thomas Pub Ltd (October, 1983)
Author: George J. Thompson
Average review score:

Add words to your insurmountable arsenal.
I first read this book right after law school, when I went to work in the criminal courts as a clerk and bailiff. At that time, in a metropolitan area of over one million, there were no security screeners at the entrances. Gang types were active in the halls. I had to "face up" with the most alpha-dominant types you have ever imagined. Oh, you have to deal with them ever day. Understood. These were people who enjoy, and even get off, on pure evil. This book taught me to actually take their "macho" and add it to my power over them. You probably don't leave home without your kevlar. If you are, or wish you could, absorb this book into the very fabric of your being... because next to kevlar it can save your life. Then give it to your partner. And then to your spouse take a look at - you will gain a whole new receptivity to your daily activities. Be proud, be professional - and become a master in the incredibly effective martial art of verbal judo.

" DONT BE IGNORANT.....BUY THIS BOOK ! "
Many in the " Law Enforcement / Security " Field would greatly improve their chances of survival and become better communicators by mastering the material in this easy to read manual for learning how to " Talk & Deal " with your fellow man & woman. This book has probably saved me from Past Mistakes that would surely have resulted in physical confrontations,...to re-hash an old saying " WINNING THE HEARTS & MINDS ". So save yourself a " LAWSUIT"... Dont be ignorant... buy this book !.

When Mack Came Back
Published in Hardcover by Dial Books for Young Readers (June, 2000)
Authors: Brad Strickland and John Thompson
Average review score:

An appealing read-aloud
The dramatic first chapter hooked my 5th grade students on Strickland's touching story of life in North Georgia during World War II as seen through the eyes of 11 year old Maury Painter.
Maury is determined to save the black lab puppy he finds tangled up in the woods. He is convinced it is his brother's dog, which was placed over 30 miles away when his brother joined the army. The book is paced beautifully to read aloud and students' interest is captured by Maury's sacrifice to save the dog, his hard work to skip a grade in school, and the anxiety which clouds their lives when his brother is reported missing in action. The ending is funny and cathartic--and for once the dog lives happily ever after! Strickland portrays life in North Georgia accurately and the dialect in the final chapter was a joy to read.

Bring Mack into your home. It will be a warmer place.
When Mack Came Back isn't just a story about a boy and his dog. It's not about a talking dog or a dog that rescues children from the bottom of wells. It's about family, faith and love, told from the point of view of Maury, a ten year old boy that loves to read and gets a bellyache when thinking about picking cotton. It's about growing up and growing wise. It involves a dog that is probably a lot like your dog, or like a dog you may know. One that eagerly awaits scraps at the dinner table and one that poops in the bushes. Still, Mack is such a sweet, loving and loyal dog. He learns quickly and tries hard. The characters are real people. People that you can't help but have feelings for as soon as they are introduced. Especially Old Pa, Maury's endearing and kind grandfather. The places and settings, described in beautiful and loving detail that only someone who was there could express, are also real. The story talks about farming, not in a romantic or idealistic way, but as the hard and honorable work that it really is. It reminds us that there were families of young soldiers, away fighting World War II, and the worries those families felt and prayers they said. This is a story that parents should read to their children and teachers should read to their pupils. Get it as a gift for a child you know. Initially they may grumble at the lack of a spaceship or dragon on the cover, but, when they start reading, will surely be delighted to read the story of an everyday person dealing with everyday issues. Brad Strickland has, again, given us an unpretentious and modest gift. If you haven't read any of his many other books, this is an excellent introduction to his work. I couldn't recommend this book more.

PHENOMENAL WORK!!
This book is a must read for anyone interested in American culture, race relations, gender relations, and/or Zora Neale Hurston. The book is small but powerful. It has made me rethink my whole understanding of the process America needs to undergo in order to bring about true healing. Through her study of Husrton, the writer addresses many, many levels of continued discontent in this country and suggests ways in which we can move to new and more sincere cross cultural relationship by awakening our national consciousness. Great text!

You Want Me to Do What?: When, Where and How to Draw the Line
Published in Paperback by Executary Services (May, 1997)
Authors: Nan Demars, Nan de Mars, and Brad Thompson
Average review score:

Very Useful
I got this book at a discount table and almost put it down when I realized it was geared toward office professionals ( I work in social services) and I am so glad I decided to risk it. The scenarios she uses, as well as the tips she gives, fit for all sorts of people in a variety of fields. The book is well written and easy to read and understand.

More useful than $5,000 worth of ethics seminars.
This is the only book on business ethics I've found that skips the preaching and focuses on the practical. Office romance, confidentiality, loyalty, harassment, deception, games -- it's all here. This is, I think, the missing link between the lofty-sounding corporate values statements and the day-to-day behaviors that affect customers, vendors, and coworkers. DeMars says that doing the right thing on a personal level is the smartest, shortest path to a more profitable enterprise. She shares more than 100 true-life scenarios from her consulting experiences to support her points. For example, she tackles the tough questions of when is it OK to lie, when and how do you hold someone accountable for his/her behavior, and how can managers and subordinates recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas. Managers need this book as much as office assistants. Finally, I found the style of writing very readable and credible. I've attended a half-dozen expensive seminars for senior managers that lauded ethical business practices, but they were too long on theory and overlooked the implementation at the office level. The devil really is in the details when it comes to making decisions about behaviors, says DeMars. She gets it right, right away. This book would have saved -- and will save me -- lots of money and time. A very solid piece of work

The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism (Vanderbilt Library of American Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (November, 2000)
Authors: Paul B. Thompson and Thomas C. Hilde
Average review score:

A great contribution to pragmatist and agrarianist thought
The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism gathers some of the best minds in American philosophy around a single theme: the relationship between pragmatism and agrarianism. The first half provides an excellent introduction to agrarian thought, its history, and its contemporary (and possibly future) relevance. The second, assuming a greater familiarity with the pragmatic tradition, limns the relationship between agrarian philosophy and pragmatism, often using one to advance or bring criticism to bear on the other. The result is remarkable, for the reader not only puts down this book with a better understanding of the roots of pragmatism and its historically contingent relation to agrarianism, but also with an exciting sense of how both of these traditions may be developed in the future. Those unfamiliar with pragmatism and agrarianism get a great introduction; those who already think of themselves as pragmatists, like myself, will find much they didn't know.
